Caries in Children and the Challenge of Access to Care

Joanna Douglass, B.D.S., D. D. S.

 

Dr. Joanna Douglass received her dental degree and doctorate in oral epidemiology from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  She serves as Associate Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the University Of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, and as Oral Health Consultant for the Connecticut Health Foundation and the Region 1 Head Start Oral Health Consultant.  She has published extensively on the etiology, prevalence, and prevention of early childhood dental caries and the education of physicians in oral health.  For the past 6 years she has facilitated eight oral health collaboratives throughout Connecticut dedicated to improving access to dental care for children on Medicaid.  Currently in her new role as consultant for Head Start, she is helping increase access to care for children in the Head Start program throughout New England.    

 

Course Description:

 

This presentation will describe the current issues around access to dental care for Connecticut children with a focus on those insured by Medicaid.  Current and historical Medicaid data will be reviewed to document the changes of the last 7 years.  Historical and future expected changes will be examined through a description of the ongoing projects taking place in Connecticut aimed at addressing access to care issues.

 

 


 

 

 

Managing Older Patients in Dental Practice

Dr. Ruth Goldblatt, DMD, FAGD, FASGD, DABSCD

 

Course Description: This course will cover a dental assistants need of understanding and education of the older patient in a dental practice. This will include a review of demographics and common medical findings. Topics also covered are polypharmacy the tips for treatment planning. Dental assistants will be guided on modification of office space, dental forms for the visually impaired and oral hygiene aids. Direction will be given to dental assistants on transferring dental patients from a wheelchair to the dental chair.

Thomas D. Taylor D.D.S., M.S.D., FACP

 

            Dr. Taylor is currently Professor and Chairman, Department of Reconstructive Sciences at the University of Connecticut.  He is involved in both clinical and laboratory research and has published extensively in the prosthodontic literature.  Dr. Taylor is past prosthodontic editor and abstract editor for the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants.  He is a diplomate and past president of the American Board of Prosthodontics and currently serves as the Board’s executive director.  He is a fellow and past president of the American College of Prosthodontists and past president of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). 

 

Elena Nazarova D.M.D., Ph.D.

 

Dr.Elena Nazarova is assistant clinical professor at the Department of Reconstructive Sciences UCONN SDM. After earning her dental degree she completed ITI Implant Fellowship and Prosthodontic Residency Program at the UCONN. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of American College of Prosthodontists. Her clinical practice is concentrated on providing comprehensive restorative care including implants.

 

Course Description:

Dental treatment with implants is turning into a routine procedure in restorative practice and becoming a standard of care in certain clinical situations. It presents a challenge for the practice and new requirements for dental assistants. They have to provide support in the process of patient education during treatment planning implants, assist in clinical procedures involving variety of new instruments and implant components, participate in maintenance of implant restorations.

Topics to be discussed during the lecture will help participants to educate their patients on the topic of dental implants; successfully manage clinical activities, lab communication and inventory; participate in long term maintenance of implant supported/retained restorations
